Carlos Minc Pushes a Bold Agenda As Brazil’s Environment Chief

Marina Silva, Carlo Minc’s predecessor, recently received almost 20% of the popular vote in the first round of the recent Brazilian Presidential election. Imagine if Ralph Nader were to win 20% of the vote in an American Presidential election, you cant. Silva’s incredible political success is a great testament to the environmental consciousness of Brazil. The appointment of Carlos Minc as her replacement at the Ministry of the Environment is a further testament to this consciousness and an example of its practical application. This article is refreshing for it reminds us tha “Enviromentalism” is not a debate in Brazil, it is a fact of life and the appointment of Senor Minc demonstrates that regardless of the greater political viscidities the Minister of Enviroment will be the Minister “for” the Environment. In the United State the equivalent environmental regulators are often play a far different role, but that’s because science is “debatable” in the United States.
